Pecha Kucha 20×20

No, I haven’t taken up Mexican wrestling (although that would be wicked cool). I will, however, be donning my best lucha outfit tomorrow night for my very first public presentation as Winnipeg Cycle Chick at Pecha Kucha 20×20 at the Park Theatre.

I knew one day I would make the podium.

Pecha Kucha (Japanese for “chit chat”) is an event format started in Tokyo for young designers to network and show their work. Presenters show 20 images and can speak about each image for only 20 seconds each, after which time a giant pair of chopsticks is used to unceremoniously pluck them right off the stage and dunk them into a giant vat of wasabi. Ok, not really, but that would be wicked cool too.

There are no rules in terms of topics, but it is suggested you talk about something you love – your dog, your collection of Nana Mouskouri records, your Mom, whatever. It is also suggested that you attend a Pecha Kucha before you present at one, but that level of preparedness isn’t really my style. After all, if I’d had any idea what a criterium was before I did one, I never would have gone.

The event is being hosted by the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (one of the only Societies I could find that would let me join), and even though I really do love design, the only reason I agreed to speak was that they said I could talk about cycling. That and I could wear my lucha outfit.

I am one of ten presenters. Most or all of them will be more intelligent and interesting, but I will likely be the only one talking about biking. Just saying.
