Lindsay Gauld Clocks a Cool Million

by CycleChick on January 22, 2013

“I suppose it’s a testament to a simple or easily amused mind, but I’ve been keeping track of my mileage ever since I started cycling in 1965. I saw a graph in a British cycling magazine in my first week of cycling and thought it seemed like a good idea.

As of today, I’m at 999,111 Kms. I plan to reach a million at some point during the Arrowhead 135. Not sure if I’ll stop to party but I’m probably too competitive for that.”

– Linsday Gauld

A million kilometers. That’s the equivalent of riding around the world 25 times, people. I’m just guessing here, but there probably aren’t many people in the world who have done that.

If you live in Winnipeg and ride a bike, you have heard of Lindsay Gauld. He was, after all, in the 1972 Olympics. Maybe you’ve bought a bike from him, raced alongside him (or probably somewhere behind him), or perhaps even had a package delivered by him. Or maybe you’ve just heard about this amazing guy who just will not stop – a real hero.

From Olympian to bike shop owner to bike courier, to say Lindsay is a cycling legend seems inadequate. After last year’s terrifying Iditarod Invitational, he even has his own Epic Scale of Badassery. Did I mention that Lindsay is 64? Don’t tell him though, I’m pretty sure he doesn’t know.

On February the second at 11:30 am, Lindsay will be riding his millionth kilometer. Since he will technically reach a (very) cool million somewhere in Minnesota, the establishment decided we should celebrate the occasion symbolically somewhere a little closer to home.

As he rides down the frozen Rivertrail into the Forks port, there will be a celebration honouring this achievement. That celebration should involve people on bikes.

As part of the celebration they are hoping to have 1000 riders on their bikes in the Forks port to welcome Lindsay as he rides in. So we will be there. We have been asked to spread the word. So spread it we shall.

Isn’t it at Arrowhead 135 in Minnesota that he’s hitting the mill for real?

A real hero indeed. Continuing to redefine what aging looks like. Congratulations Lindsay.

He should start competing with Danny Chew, the “Million Mile Man” (he was around 710,000 mi. as of September 2012, his latest monthly stats update)

Here’s hoping for an Olympic sized turnout of bikers to show Lindsay how huge his accomplishment really is and as you said to show Winnipeg who we think a Real hero is … on his bike – not alone!

There are a few people around that I admire and respect for their athletic prowess and modesty. Then there are people like Linsday that I am just in awe of. Total different scale of Badassery indeed. :)

Going to have to find some better gloves if the long-term forecast for Saturday holds, but barring something major, I’ll be there. Lindsay deserves all the celebration we can give him.

Nice to see such a positive event to report on after the gloom of the Armstrong confession.

[...] 5.  You’re getting fat from all those Waffle Dollars, so go for a ride.  While you may miss a little bit of the Saturday race, I would suggest heading to The Forks to support a local hero, Lindsay Gauld, and celebrate his accomplishment of reaching 1 Million KMs.  This man has been riding his bike since the US joined the Vietnam war in ’65, he’s the definition of a bad ass.  CycleChick has all the details right here.
